About Ben's Builds
My Story
Ben’s builds is a small business owned and operated by a self taught teenage woodworker with a passion for creating beautiful things. The business was born from my passion for tinkering and creation that began when I was a young child. My creations started with LEGOS, moved on to cardboard, then popsicle sticks and finally on to wood. I spent hours learning about different tools, materials, processes and techniques and practicing on smaller projects. As my skills, techniques and experience have progressed so has my business. The Design Process
Each project begins with a conversation about what each customer is looking for and the purpose that the item is going to serve. I then develop a design that is based on our conversation, my ideas and design inspirations. Using CAD (Computer Aided Design) I create a visual concept of the finished project. This offers the customer an opportunity to make changes prior to the start of the build. The materials and cut list are planned to keep each project as cost effective as possible. And finally the creation begins…
The Building Process
Once the customer has approved the design, I get to work. Through countless hours of cutting, routing, drilling, and driving, I am able to turn simple pieces of wood into custom designed creations. Once the project is fully assembled, the finishing process begins. Working through all the grits of sandpaper, the entire assembly is sanded until smooth to the touch.
The Finishing Process
I work with each customer on selecting the ideal finish for their project. Finish selection varies based on the wood grain, color, and desired use of the item. Most common choices are stains and paints that bring out the individual beauty in each piece. Several coats are applied until the color and texture are just right. Once the finish dries, I apply multiple coats of clear lacquer to seal and protect all surfaces to ensure the piece lasts for many years.
